Flags are the traditional colors of yellow, white, red, blue, and green. A large variety of prayers written in Tibetan surrounds the image of the windhorse. The windhorse is in the company of the four animals of the cardinal directions: garuda and dragon in the upper corners, and tiger and snow lion in the lower corners. In this context, the wind horse is without wings, but carries the Three Jewels of wish fulfilling. 

The windhorse image, taken from Tibetan folk culture, symbolizes well being and good fortune. Prayer flags themselves are commonly referred to as windhorse or lung at. They flutter in the wind, and carry the prayers skyward like the horse flying in the wind.
